The Switch

In the beginning I started out having essential oils for a defuser, & a newfound knowledge that what I was putting on my body was just as important. So where do you start! I found some apps that educated me about the little nasties in my products & suggest healthier alternatives. Since I have come a little farther in my organic journey I don't use them as often but if you are just starting out I recommend trying them.
Environmental Working Group Healthy Living & Think Dirty are the two I downloaded.  These apps rate each individual ingredient in each item 0-10, as well as green, yellow, or red. Then that product has an overall rating as to how safe & healthy it is. I have enjoyed using both of these.
So I became that person... scanning barcodes in stores. I got a lot of questionable looks! If the product wasn't rated a green 0-2 I didn't purchase it. This method however was just my way of being more conscious about product ingredients. No matter what your first step is the end goal is to be healthier & happier! Today I have the first organic products that I ever purchased. I found these items  at my local Whole Foods, or Target. I have since then branched out to other brands that are available online. You can never go wrong with starting local though.

I highly recommend trying out Shea Moisture! This is the first organic shampoo that I switched too. The company has great prices and is cruelty free, certified organic fair trade, & sustainably produced. Also 10% of Community Commerce sales go to women-led businesses! They also have makeup and other beauty products.

tea tree, Acure brightening facial scrub, Acure facial cleansing creme

Coconut oil is one of my favorite things about going organic. I have dry sensitive skin & taking off my makeup pre-organic life was terrible. Everything I used stung my eyes and made my skin even dryer! I know that every blog or youtube video praises coconut oil so you're probably sick of it. It's rated 4 on the comedogenicity scale, so it doesn't work for everyone. Some great alternative oils to use are Jojoba or Sweet Almond.
I bought Dr. Bronner's castile soap for recipes & as my body wash.  I have the Tea Tree & Peppermint scents! I've switched to a different body wash from Shea Moisture but still think this brand is great.
Lastly, Acure is another brand that I recommend trying out. It's a family owned sustainable company with awesome prices. They are cruelty free & their products are free of gluten, parabens, sulfates, phthalates, toxic preservatives, & artificial colors.  This is the first facial scrub & cleanser I switched to & I love it! They have shampoo, conditioner, body wash & lotion as well. I'm looking forward to trying out their sensitive skin facial cleanser in the future.

I hope you've enjoyed this post & that it inspires you to find some great brands that will work for you. What starter brands did you enjoy the most when switching? I have some great nerdy post planned so stay tuned!
