My Natural Deodorant Experience

Organic deodorant is a tricky topic for me but I finally made the switch. Today I'll share my experience! I found switching this particular product the hardest for me. I did a lot of research and their is great advice about natural deodorant out there. So my advice would be to do the research & just go for it!  I just switched in January so I'm still figuring out what works best for me & I don't know how it will be in the summer. I have a lot to share anyway. I won't talk about the conventional brands I used before but I have some natural ones to suggest of course (links included).

The first step is the detox period! This is why a lot of people don't stick around. It wasn't as painful for me as it is for some, because I have a pretty healthy diet. The day you put on your natural deodorant is when your detox will start. Some people experience extra sweaty, smelly pits. Your body is finally releasing the toxins its suppose to! Based on your genetic level of sweating & diet it could suck, I won't lie!

Tips that could help: Apple Cider Vinegar spray, bentonite clay mask, & tea tree soap. I apply a bentonite clay mask to draw out extra toxins. I also used tea tree soap for extra cleanliness. In the morning I use an Apple Cider Vinegar/ distilled water spray for the smell. You could even put a couple lemon or orange EO drops in that mixture. Citrus is your friend when you use natural deodorant!

Left to Right: StinkBug Naturals Coconut Oil Patchouli, The Honest Company Bergamot + Sage, Schmidt's Bergamot + Lime

Finding the right product? There are a lot of options for everyone. Sprays, pots, roll-on sticks, & DIY recipes. You can even find it in eco-friendly packaging. My first choice was Schmidt's Bergamot & Lime. I personally enjoyed this product. I think it did an awesome job. I thought I would be sweatier, & was pleasantly surprised.  I also heard that you can mix a spray, & roll-on for "extra protection". That didn't work for me! I tried The Honest Company spray first, then the Schmidt's but for some odd reason I was sweatier with that combo. The Stinkbug stick didn't work for me either. I'm not sure where I even bought that brand.

Here is the rub for sensitive skin gals like me out there! Baking soda is the main ingredient in a lot of the products wether its a DIY recipe or store bought. This is no good for us! Here is where my personal experience comes into play. I had a reaction to the baking soda base in the Schmidt's. I knew it would happen. I did the research & I knew the risk. I tried it anyway & got a rash. I still loved Schmidt's so don't rule it out unless you know you'll have a reaction. Some suggest only using those products once a week or on hot summer days.

So alas there I was searching for another product yet again! I focused on reviews for a "non baking soda" deodorant that would work just as good. I decided to give Meow Meow Tweet a go!  Its made with Arrowroot powder instead. I have gotten a rash from this, but I believe it only happens when I use too much.  Arrowroot powder isn't as strong as Baking Soda but with any powdery product angry skin will follow. I believe that it keeps me just as dry as the Schmidts. This scent is very light but I like this product. Bonus the packaging is compostable. You can get a pot, or the stick & they are in select Target locations. This brand makes vegan, natural & organic small batch products. I love their website because it's so fun! I also have three cats so how could I not love their packaging? =^.^=

Further research will ensue but I've had a positive pit switch! Luckily no one has approached me to tell me I smell, which I hope that means I don't.

That is all I have for you today! I hope that you find this useful, & that you have a positive deodorant experience. Stay tuned for more nerdy posts!
